Background

This is another project that I completed during my time at HopeWorks. My goal for this project was to create a personal website about something that I was passionate about, while using the coding skills that I developed at this internship. This was a way for me to showcase what I learned and determined whether or not it was enough to put a complete website together from scratch.

Role

Solo Designer

Design Process

The way I approached this development process was different than my typical approach. I usually start off by creating wireframe and drawing sketches of what I want the basic layout to look like before I start designing in Figma. For this particular project I decided to just start coding and see how far I could get with combining my skills with my creativity.

HTML:

CSS:

JavaScript:

As seen below, I went with a heavy “minimalist” style since this was my first time coding a website from beginning to end with no template assisting me. Understanding CSS helped me design the format of the page to the way I wanted it, with the images and text being shown in the center of the page, as opposed to them being either to the left or the right.

Results and Takeaways

The purpose of me creating this website was to show something that I have extremely high interest in. Since I chose Hip-Hop to be a representation of one of my interests, I thoroughly explained many aspects of it. I went into detail about its history and what created Hip-Hop as a whole, my favorite parts about it, and how it has influenced not only my life but the lives of so many other people within my community. Building this website from scratch gave me the confidence to know how to approach a similar situation, and to rely on my skills and knowledge when design templates are not available for future projects.
